Author: Archdiocese of BrisbaneJohn 3:16. What better Scripture could we be given on this feast of the Trinity Sunday? It’s perhaps one of the most well-known Bible verses for Catholics and is worth spending some serious time with, mining the depths of God’s self-communication to us in the Word. Each one of us is known and loved by the God who also desires to be known and loved by each one of us. This is an extraordinary phenomenon to think and pray about.
God’s desire to be known by us is indeed a phenomenon because far from being distant, aloof and beyond our perception, God entered human experience in the person of Jesus, a fellow human being, so that we could begin to know what God is like and encounter his love and joy through the power of the Holy Spirit. Friends, if something, or in our case, someone, is so freely given out of love, it behoves each and every person to whom the gift has been given, to discover the gift, to accept the gift and express gratitude for the gift. And then spend the rest of our lives becoming intimate with the precious gift of Jesus.
The celebration of Trinity Sunday invites us to reaffirm our gratitude for what God did two thousand years ago and for what God continues to do in our world and lives today through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit who desires to be known and loved by each one of us.
