Let’s Talk About Lent – Episode 3: Why do we need to give up something for Lent – Transcript
Hey everyone, I’m Fr Will. Hi I’m Sr T. And we’re here to talk to you guys about Lent! So Father Will, why do we need to give up something for Lent?
Yeah I think giving up something for Lent is really a call back to the reliance on the providence of God and we think about the book of Exodus and the story of Exodus and how the people of Israel really had to rely on God to provide for them. Even though they didn’t know where they were going or what the next day was going to look like. And so really it’s a call for us to go back to the basics. And to really give ourselves over to that kind of love for God and the love for the things of God. And it’s pretty hard you know like not every Lenten journey is going to be a walk in the park, but I think through that we can really come to experience a new way of being Christian in the world.
What you say is so true. It just remind me of we need to turn away from something in order to turn towards something. Like in the Exodus, the people need to turn away from slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. So they need to give up something. And so really it is about the giving up and turning towards love and self-giving love. So I invite you to consider how what you could turn away from and what you could turn towards to during this Lent.
