Samuel was lying in the sanctuary under the spiritual guidance of Eli. He was being formed into how to discern the voice of God. As a new year unfolds for us, we too are called to lie in the sanctuary so we might hear God’s call again. The premier sanctuary is the place of assembly, God’s house, the place where Christ is most strikingly present, the place of Eucharist and adoration. Our greatest spiritual guide is the Holy Spirit. These things the psalmist knew. I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me, he heard my cry. He put a new song in my mouth. Praise of our God.When the apostle Andrew met Jesus and saw where he lived, he was given a new song in his mouth, “I have seen the Lord”. Is there no greater song that we can sing? “We have seen the Lord.” When we come to the assembly to hear God’s Word, he does stoop down to us for he hears our cry. He gives us his Word and his Life. Let us wait eagerly each week for this moment. Let us study God’s Word carefully each week. Let us reflect prayerfully each week. And let us tell the world, “We have seen the Lord!”
