Archbishop Mark Benedict Coleridge was born in Melbourne on 25 September 1948, the third of five children. His education spanned South Australia and Victoria, with his senior schooling completed at St Kevin’s College, Melbourne. Initially pursuing a career as a diplomat, at tertiary level he was awarded an Arts degree, majoring in English and French, from Melbourne University. However, he later felt called to the priesthood, studying at Corpus Christi College from 1969-74.
Archbishop Mark was ordained a priest at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne, on 18 May 1974. After Ordination, he worked as an assistant priest in various Melbourne parishes for a few years before studying Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. After four years in Rome and Jerusalem he returned to Melbourne to teach Scripture. In 1997, he was invited to work in the Vatican Secretariat of State.
He returned to Australia as Auxiliary Bishop for Melbourne in 2002 and became Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn in 2006. On 2 April 2012, Archbishop Mark was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Brisbane, leading the province of Queensland. In reflecting on his five decades as a priest and a bishop, Archbishop Coleridge has noted that almost nothing had turned out as he expected: “Jesus often surprises, but he never disappoints.”
Archbishop Mark Coleridge retired on 11 September 2025 and is the Archbishop Emeritus of Brisbane.
