Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Transcript

The beautiful Sermon on the Mount filled hope in the hearts of the people. Jesus continues motivating the followers who they really are. He said, “You are the salt of the earth, add taste to lives. You are the light, shine before the world.” What does the salt and the light have to teach us? As salt purifies, preserves, and produces rich flavor for our daily food, the disciples of Jesus are invited to be the “salt” for the world of human society to refine and spread the rich flavor of God’s mercy, righteousness, peace, and joy. We can’t imagine a life without light. The light gives life and it leads. Light is also seen as symbol or expression of the inner beauty, truth and goodness of God. The light of Christ, strengthens our mission, to be light-bearers of Christ, so that others may see the truth of the Gospel and be freed from the bondages and deception. A self-centered life is a tasteless life in darkness. The salt can’t make food tasty, being away from the food, in a safe place. A lamp hidden doesn’t serve the purpose. To be effective, Prophet Isaiah reminds, that we need to be involved where we live, body broken and blood -shed. Christ is the source of our saltiness, Christ is the fuel for our light. Let us add taste of Christ to the society in which we live and thus give meaning to our life. Let us shine, bring the light of Christ, and thus give purpose to our existence.
