Working in the emergency department as a registered nurse taught me one thing very quickly, always expect the unexpected. I’ve seen patients walk in smiling and collapse minutes later. I have watched ordinary days turn into life-or-death moments. No warning. No time to prepare. In that kind of environment, you learn to stay alert because everything can change in an instant. Jesus speaks of that same truth in today’s Gospel, “As it was in the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” People were eating, drinking, marrying, just living their lives. Then the flood came. Not because they were doing anything bad, but because they were not ready. Jesus is not trying to scare us. He’s inviting us to wake up. To live with purpose. Because just like the emergency room, life does not always give us notice. Christ could return at any moment. Our lives could shift without warning. So how do we stay ready? Not by fear, but by faithfulness. Stay close to God. Live with love. Keep watch, not with anxiety, but with hope. Because for those who are ready, the unexpected won’t be something to fear. It will be the moment we have been waiting for.
