With the recent focus on Rome and in particular, the Vatican, it was coincidental that I have just finished an excellent book, based on true events, but clearly embellished to fill in forgotten or unknown details. The Book titled ‘My Father’s House’ is written by Joseph O’Connor, (who incidentally is the brother of the Irish singer Sinead O’Connor). It is a re-imagining of an earlier book (and film starring Gregory Peck) called The Crimson and the Black by J.P. Gallagher, about an Irish priest, Hugh Flaherty, who, while living and working in the independent country of Vatican City during the Second World War, reluctantly dedicates himself, along with some influential colleagues, into helping those escaping from the Nazis. It’s an absolute thriller, full of suspense, while using an interesting device of testimonies from his fascinating collaborators. It may have a particular appeal to those of you who are involved in your parish choir. I’m no spoiler, so you’ll have to read it to see what I mean. I feel it’s about time for another re-make of the movie.
