Jesus says so little as he enters His trial and crucifixion. We are called to journey with Jesus in His suffering which He suffers for us. We too need say little but rather be attentive to suffering. The little Jesus says is important. Firstly, He simply admits to the charge as the Son of God. Then through His final hours He addresses three groups of people. To the daughters of Jerusalem He says, ‘weep not for me but for yourselves and for your children’. To those responsible for his crucifixion He says, ‘Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing’. And then to one thief, ‘do you not fear God?’ And to the other, ‘you will be with me in paradise’. Finally, Jesus says to the Father, ‘Into your hands I commend my spirit’. All Jesus says is offerings of mercy and forgiveness. As we journey through this holiest of weeks, let us, weep in gratitude for God’s mercy, seek forgiveness for causing suffering, acknowledge Jesus as saviour when He is ridiculed and spat upon. And finally, in the silence of Holy Saturday, let us say, ‘Father into your hands I commend my Spirit’
