None of us can remember life without the New Testament, it’s always been there. In this podcast series “The Words that Make the World” hosted by Archbishop Mark Coleridge, we will explore the New Testament and how it has made the world in many ways, and made you and I.
Learn about Saint Paul who wrote some of the earliest texts and about how his mission depended upon the survival of communities. We will learn that Paul wrote his letters to particular communities for particular purposes, and how these letters were found to be so powerful, and helpful, by those communities that they were circulated into other communities. And today, these letters are still relevant, and important, and continue to speak to us.
This podcast will also explore the four Gospels and how they came to be. Archbishop Mark will answer the questions: How and why did the Gospels emerge? Why didn’t we just get more letters? Why did we get this extraordinary literary form, unique to the New Testament, that we call the Gospels today? We will learn that God knew us so well, that He knew that we needed a story, a story that was for everyone.
We will learn that the first of the Gospels to emerge was actually the Gospel of Mark and that there was nothing quite like the Gospels before. We will go on a journey of discovering the Bible and see in this first Gospel where the church turns from letter to story.
Archbishop Mark will also explore the Gospel stories that recount a unique event, something that had never happened; that God had taken flesh, become one of us, that God had died the most shameful death known to the ancient world. We know that God was still with us, and Jesus had been raised from the dead in the most extraordinary and unexpected way. And then to recount this kind of story required another form of letters. Thus, we will learn when the Gospels were born, and the world had never seen anything quite like this before.
So, join us in this podcast series, where we will learn how the New Testament came to be, and how the church also came to be, as texts and community which are intimately connected and related.
