Second Sunday of Advent

Transcript

Advent comes from the word arrival. Adventus. Here in this second week of Advent, it’s not just about passive waiting for Christ or twiddling our thumbs; it’s about active preparation for Him. In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist appears in the wilderness, and he calls out, “Repent, for the kingdom of God is near!” He challenges the crowds, urging them not to rely on their Jewish status as children of Abraham but to bear fruit worthy of repentance. John the Baptist’s words are a wake up call for each one of us. Advent is not just about decorating our homes, it’s about clearing space in our hearts for Christ. What needs to change in our lives? What sins do we need to confess? What habits do we need to turn away from? How can I make more room for the Adventus of baby Jesus this Christmas? How can I smooth over the bumpy roads of my heart so my heart can lead directly to Jesus? As we light the Second Advent Candle this week, we are reminded that it symbolises peace, calling us to prepare our hearts for Christ, who is the Prince of Peace. Perhaps we can exercise a little bit more patience this Advent. Maybe we can do an act of kindness for someone, pay for someone’s coffee, or give someone a compliment. Maybe we can create a bit more peace in our own hearts by spending some quiet time with the Lord, who is the creator of the whole entire universe. Listen to Him, what is Jesus saying to you? As we make Advent a time of active preparation, rather than just passive waiting, may we turn back to God with open hearts. Prepare the way for the Lord. May you prepare well!
