You have most likely heard at length how Jesus tells us to love our enemies and to treat others as we would like to be treated. Not meeting misconduct towards us with the same in return is certainly part of Jesus’ teaching. So too is treating others as we’d like to be treated. However, when Jesus gives this instruction, He is calling us to give the greatest act of love. To both see and treat others as God does. It is not reasonable to feel love for those we struggle with as much as we do for our own family, and those we’re close to. That would even be unacceptable. But, like God, we are asked to love our enemies so as to will the absolute best for them. And even go out of our way to assist them in achieving this. This is the love of God that God has for all of God’s people. Because God never stops willing us to be the best we can be. And when we wish ill of our enemies, we do in some way prevent them from being their best. So let’s not pretend to have deep affection towards those we struggle with, or even fail to see good in. But let us be ready to play whatever role we are called to play, in assisting our enemies, and everyone, to strive for holiness.
