In today’s Gospel, Jesus watches as guests at a dinner scramble for the best seats. He gently reminds them, and us, that the way of God is not about seeking honour, but about choosing humility. For families, this message is especially powerful. In our homes, humility is not just a virtue, it’s the glue that holds us together. It’s found in the parent who quietly sacrifices for their children, in the child who learns to share, in the brother or sister who forgives. Humility is choosing love over pride, service over recognition. Jesus says, “Take the lowest place.” In family life, that might mean doing the unnoticed everyday jobs, listening patiently, or letting someone else go first. These small acts, done with love, are the seeds which grow and allow the flourishing of peace and joy. And when Jesus speaks of inviting those who cannot repay us the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind. He’s calling us to extend our family table. To welcome the lonely, the struggling and the outsider. Because in God’s family, everyone has a place.
