Word of God Sunday is a special day established by Pope Francis to honour Sacred Scripture. This observance invites the faithful to deepen their encounter with God through prayerful study and reflection on God’s living word. Join Deacon Marty from Catholic Mission in prayer as we seek to embrace Scripture’s transformative power and allow its divine wisdom to inspire and guide our spiritual journey.

In this Year of Jubilee, The Church in Australia celebrates Word of God Sunday on the first Sunday in February. The Sacred Scriptures are not just a series of stories or historical narratives and biographies. They have a specific authority. They are inspired directly from God. Saint Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans, since faith comes from hearing, and what is heard is based on the word of Christ. So I invite to you to join me in prayer.
Gracious God, continue to teach us and inspire us through Sacred Scripture. These are not like other books that gather dust on a bookshelf but are living documents that inform every aspect our lives. We pray that our Church will continue to respond to the Word of God, as we continue to be missionary disciples of Christ. May we continue to listen to the Scriptures when they are proclaimed, and that God’s word may fall on the good soil that will lead to a fruitful harvest. Finally, we pray for our sisters and brothers who have not heard the message of Christ. May we continue to minister them and that we are willing to bring them the good news of salvation as expressed by God’s love for us. Amen.
Perhaps you have a favourite line or scripture passage. I invite you to read it, reflect on it and pray about it this Word of God Sunday.
