First Eucharist or First Communion

First Communion is the culmination of the sacraments which initiate us a member of the Church community.

God’s word First Eucharist or First Communion

Having already received the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, First Holy Communion, that is, sharing in the Body and Blood of the Lord at Mass for the first time, is the climax and completion of the initiation process. Eating and drinking with the rest of the community at the Table of the Lord is a sign of belonging fully to the parish community.

When and where do we celebrate First Communion?

Children who are baptised and have received the Sacrament of Confirmation may be considered eligible for First Communion from the year when they turn nine. The local parish is where children celebrate First Communion because the parish is their local community of faith.

Who prepares children for First Communion?

Parents and carers, together with the parish are responsible for preparing children in prayerful and practical ways to celebrate the sacraments. This includes helping them become familiar with the rituals associated with receiving the sacraments. Parishes conduct sacramental preparation programs that assist parents in preparing their children.

What do the children wear?

In the past, the standard dress for celebrating First Communion has been the white dress and veil for girls and a shirt, tie and sometimes a jacket or suit for boys. Our way of celebrating the sacraments has changed over the years, as has the accepted style of dress for important occasions. What is appropriate will be influenced by the varying situations, traditions and wishes of the families involved. Matters such as dress will be included in parish preparation sessions.

Your local parish will be pleased to provide more information about the support it provides to help prepare children for First Communion. Liturgy Brisbane also has a resource available to help you family plan to receive First Communion.
