In a 2019 presentation, Pope Francis stated:

Upholding Catholic Teachings

As Catholics, we are called to recognise and uphold the dignity of every person, as taught through the gospel and Catholic Social Teachings. However, modern slavery—both globally and here in Australia—continues to undermine these principles.

Our commitment in the Archdiocese of Brisbane

The Archdiocese is committed to playing an active role in the fight to end modern slavery by:

  • Identifying risks within our supply chains
  • Engaging with suppliers of goods and services to ensure they understand the risks
  • Working towards solutions that minimise and eliminate modern slavery risks in their operations

Legal responsibilities: modern slavery statements

Under the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth), businesses with an annual revenue of over $100 million are required to report on the steps they’ve taken to assess and address modern slavery risks.

As part of the Australian Catholic Anti-Slavery Network (ACAN), the archdiocese submits an annual Modern Slavery Statement, reflecting our ongoing efforts in this area.
