Catholic Tertiary Youth Initiatives
Catholic tertiary youth initiatives provide a space for young people to stay connected to the faith as they transition from high school to adulthood.
There are a range of faith groups, societies, and ministries that operate on tertiary campuses throughout the Archdiocese of Brisbane. They vary in activity and emphasis but generally operate using a peer-to-peer model with casual gatherings for students to share in fellowship as they discover and grow in understanding of the Christian life and Catholic Church teachings.
The following list is not exhaustive, but provides a snapshot of the groups active on South East Queensland campuses:
- Australian Catholic University Campus Ministry (MacAuley at Banyo Campus)
- Freedom CMC (Queensland University of Technology)
- QUT Catholics (Queensland University of Technology)
- Newman Society (University of Queensland)
Tertiary chaplaincy
Catholic or ecumenical chaplaincy is available at all major tertiary institutions. The role of a chaplain is to ensure that opportunities for faith formation do not end with the completion of year 12.
Through a mix of drop in-centres and peer ministry offered by on-campus groups, tertiary chaplains strive toward ministering to students for a continued pathway of spiritual development and the formation of young adults who can speak intelligently and engagingly about their faith.
Where Catholic chaplaincy is present, the aim is to encourage young adults to discover and grow in their understanding of the Christian life and Catholic Church teachings. Often the Sacraments are made available through tertiary chaplaincy.
