In what way do we try to understand God? On this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we reflect on who God truly is and how our one God exists in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But let us ask ourselves seriously: can we ever fully understand who God is? Can we fully understand even the things we think we know well? For example, what is the exact number of people living in Australia right now? We may say around 27 million, but in reality, we cannot know the exact number at any given moment because of constant births and deaths. If we cannot completely understand even ordinary realities of life, how then can we expect to fully grasp the mystery of God at once? I am not trying to say that it is entirely pointless to make an effort to understand God. Rather, this solemnity is a time for us to acknowledge the limits of our understanding before the mystery of God and to recognise those limits as a sign of humility and reliance on our God. The Holy Trinity reminds us that God is always greater than our thoughts and words, yet still lovingly reveals Himself to us through His love and mercy. Even though we cannot fully comprehend God, Jesus clearly tells us one truth about God, that everyone who believes in Him may not be lost. God is always with us in His special ways. May this Solemnity help us not only to think about God more deeply, but also to express our humility and trust more deeply in the God who always remembers and accompanies us.
