What do you love the most? Or perhaps I should rephrase that question, who do you love the most? One of the clearest indicators of love is sacrifice. We will sacrifice for most the things we love the most. Car lovers out there might be happy to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of dollars for a car that they love. For those of us, like me, who prefer two wheeled transport, such an investment can seem outrageous! But of course some of you might raise eyebrows at how much money I spend on a push bike! It really is about what we love!Love is at the centre of Christianity. But love in the Christian tradition has a hierarchy. Saint Augustine wrote, that living a just and holy life requires us to love things, in the right order.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, anyone who loves his life loses it. Today we’re invited to examine what we love. Do we love God more than we love our own lives? Do we love the people in our lives more than we love the things we own? Do we have our loves in the right order? I’ll leave you with one final thought. If love is revealed by how much we sacrifice, we might take a moment to consider how much God loves you and me.
What is God willing to sacrifice for you and me? The answer is his son, Jesus. God loved you and I enough to sacrifice the life of his son. Today God invites you to return that love, by placing your love for God above all other loves.
