  Having received his first appointment as an associate pastor, the newly ordained priest, before celebrating his first Mass, went to his parish priest for some guidance. “What should I preach about?” Asked the young priest. And the advice he got was, “Preach about ten minutes.” Dear friends, it’s that time of the year again, and we all know that what we are preaching about today is Advent, the coming of our saviour, who was, who is, and who is to come, Emmanuel!

  Saint Paul, in the second reading today was absolutely clear in reminding us of that special grace God has already given us, which according to him, has enriched us in speech and knowledge of every kind. We must therefore try to utilise this grace by staying awake and alive to the needs of others, in anticipation of Christ’s coming. Let us not allow this special grace that Advent brings to pass us by.

  According to Saint Paul, it will enable us to recognise the presence of Christ in the poor, the needy, who will come to us for help in this Holy season of Advent. It will enable us to recognise the presence of Christ in our parish communities who gather to worship with us, in those we encounter in the exercise of our functions, in the sick, the homeless, the prisoners, and in various ways and times that Christ may choose to reveal Himself to us.

  Like the doorkeeper in Mark’s gospel today, we must therefore be on our guards, always awake, so that Christ will not find us unprepared when he returns. Finally, my dear friends, joining in the words of Saint Paul, I proclaim, Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
