On this Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Ascension of our Lord. The first reading summaries Jesus’ Ascension, “as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” The Ascension of the Lord is not the departure of Jesus from us, rather it must be seen as a new presence of Jesus among us through signs and in the power of the Holy Spirit. As one baptised, you and I are called to be the signs and channels of bring Jesus to others and in our world at large. This is what Saint Paul alludes to in the second reading, when said, “I beg you, to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with lowliness and meekness, with patience; forbearing one another in love, and eager to maintain the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.” Our mission as Christians is to be the face of Jesus and God’s love, compassion, and peace wherever we find ourselves. Like the apostles, we might have been idle gazing into the sky and feeling overwhelmed or ineffective in the face of the numerous life challenges, and even threats to our faith. We might have been idle also, thinking it is someone’s job to be Jesus’ hands and feet in our world in the work of evangelisation.
Jesus is saying to you and I today. You are my disciple whether you are in your home, in the school, in your workplace or anywhere on earth. It is a call for us to get out of our comfort zones and to bring the presence of Jesus Christ anywhere we find ourselves. It’s a call to be light in the darkness and love where there is hatred. Remain Blessed!
