The first priority in Archbishop Mark’s Apostolic Priorities for the Archdiocese of Brisbane, documented in With Lamps Ablaze, is Teaching Prayer. He says, “Often we urge people to pray but don’t really teach them how to pray… Now is the time to teach ways of prayer which are mature and all-embracing. Christian prayer begins not with speaking but with listening; and learning to pray is therefore learning to listen – to listen even to the silences of God. If all we do is speak, then in the words of Jesus we “babble like the pagans” (Matt 6:7). But if we speak after listening and in response to God who always has the first word, then we speak according to the mind of the Holy Spirit. That’s what we need to teach and learn. In the Gospel of Mark, we read that Jesus called the twelve apostles to himself, first of all, “that they might be with him” (3:14). This is where the mission starts: being with Jesus, which is what prayer is.”
Join us for our new weekly series, Let’s Pray, where we invite you to pray along with us. Each week we will invite you to pray a new prayer with us – maybe you don’t know what to pray, or want to pray along with someone, or want to practice your faith through prayer. Our Let’s Pray series is for everyone.
In celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly today, we are joined by Rob and Kathy, grandparents in our community, to gather in prayer to celebrate and seek blessings for all grandparents. We acknowledge the unique role grandparents have in our families and communities. We pray not only for our strength and health, but also for the wisdom to guide our children and grandchildren with love and faith. So, let’s pray.

Seeking God's Wisdom and Strength: A Special Prayer for Grandparents
Author: Archdiocese of Brisbane
Hello, we are Rob and Kathy, blessed grandparents, joining you in prayer today. God has blessed us with many things in our lives. He blessed us with the families we’re born into He blessed us with our own family of five children, and now he’s blessed us with our grandchildren. And it’s a privilege to share the moment with you all today.Today we gather in prayer to celebrate and seek blessings for all grandparents. We acknowledge the unique role grandparents have in our families and communities. We pray not only for our strength and health, but also for the wisdom to guide our children and grandchildren with love and faith. Let’s pray.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Lord, our God, we thank You for the gift of grandparenthood, the joy and the challenges it brings. We ask for Your light to guide us, Your wisdom to teach us, and Your hand to support us. Bless our hearts with patience and our minds with clarity.
Protect all grandparents, O Lord, and grant them health so that they may be a pillar of strength and a beacon of faith in their families.
Inspire us to be mentors and spiritual guides for our grandchildren. Embodying the fruits of the Holy Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. May we be examples of Your love and grace. Bless our grandchildren, protect them from harm and lead them on a path of righteousness.
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
As we continue with our daily lives, let us carry the strength and peace from this prayer. Let our actions reflect the love and wisdom we have sought today. May our journey as grandparents be marked by faith and joy, nurturing the next generation in a spirit of love that echoes the teachings of Christ.
