The first priority in Archbishop Mark’s Apostolic Priorities for the Archdiocese of Brisbane, documented in With Lamps Ablaze, is Teaching Prayer. He says, “Often we urge people to pray but don’t really teach them how to pray… Now is the time to teach ways of prayer which are mature and all-embracing. Christian prayer begins not with speaking but with listening; and learning to pray is therefore learning to listen – to listen even to the silences of God. If all we do is speak, then in the words of Jesus we “babble like the pagans” (Matt 6:7). But if we speak after listening and in response to God who always has the first word, then we speak according to the mind of the Holy Spirit. That’s what we need to teach and learn. In the Gospel of Mark, we read that Jesus called the twelve apostles to himself, first of all, “that they might be with him” (3:14). This is where the mission starts: being with Jesus, which is what prayer is.”
Join us for our new weekly series, Let’s Pray, where we invite you to pray along with us. Each week we will invite you to pray a new prayer with us – maybe you don’t know what to pray, or want to pray along with someone, or want to practice your faith through prayer. Our Let’s Pray series is for everyone.
This week, we invite you to join us and Fr Jerzy Prucnal from Our Lady of Victories, Bowen Hills parish to pray The Divine Mercy Chaplet. It is a powerful prayer given to us by God to teach us to trust Him always, especially in our final moments. The Church of Our Lady of Victories has played a significant role in promoting this devotion since 1996. The Chaplet is recited using regular Rosary beads and is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska. It is a prayer where we ask for God’s mercy and remind ourselves to rely on Him, replacing our worries with trust. Let us live out the words “Jesus, I trust in You.” So, let’s pray.

Praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet
Author: Archdiocese of Brisbane
‘Mankind will not have peace, until it turns with trust to My Mercy’. Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska recorded these words of Jesus, in her diary. Welcome to Our Lady of Victories, Bowen Hills, which has had a special role in promoting the Divine Mercy devotion in our Archdiocese; since 1996. Our beautiful Church, which opened on the 26th of April, 1925, is the premier memorial for all Queensland Catholic soldiers and sailors, who died in World War I. Serving both English and Polish-speaking parishioners, it is also known as the ‘White Temple of Peace’. God’s merciful love is central to the Gospel message.During the 1930s, Jesus reminded us of this, when He appeared in this way, during private revelations to the Polish Sister Faustina. It was also a Polish Pope, who first saw the Divine Mercy image as a young man praying in Faustina’s convent chapel many years later, during World War II. Saint John Paul II brought the message of mercy to the world; even right here to this very altar, when he said Mass at our parish as Cardinal Wojtyla in 1973. In the year 2000, this Pope named the Second Sunday of Easter, already a Solemnity, as Divine Mercy Sunday; according to Our Lord’s wishes. God gave us the Divine Mercy Chaplet as a powerful prayer, to teach us to trust God at all times and especially at the moment of our death.
I myself, and so many others, have witnessed that power in profound ways and we invite you to experience the same. Our hand-painted Divine Mercy image comes from the major Divine Mercy Shrine in Poland, where Saint John Paul II entrusted the whole world to the Divine Mercy. So, here today, in the company of first class relics of Saint Faustina and Saint John Paul II, we offer our prayer to God. Asking for mercy upon us all and for world peace. In the Real Presence of our Merciful Saviour, and led by our Parish Priest, Fr Jerzy Prucnal, let’s now pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet together.

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen. The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.Divine Mercy Chaplet
